Eating out with kids sounds like a treat… until the bill lands and you realise you could’ve fed everyone at home for a week.
As a mom, I don’t eat out to be fancy.
I eat out because sometimes I’m tired, overstimulated, and I need someone else to cook the food and clear the plates.
Over time, I’ve learned how to eat out without blowing the budget — and without sucking all the joy out of it.
These are the eating-out hacks I actually use as a UK mom.
1. Kids Eat Free (But Only If It Makes Sense)
“Kids eat free” sounds amazing — until you realise it’s often tied to adult meals, specific days, or awkward times.
My rule?
Only use it if I was already planning to eat out.
If I’m forcing a restaurant trip just because it’s free, it usually isn’t worth it. But if it fits naturally into the day — absolute win.
Always check restaurant websites or social pages before you go. Deals change constantly.
2. Discount & Membership Apps Are Worth It
If you’re not using at least one discount app, you’re paying more than you need to.
I always check before ordering. If there’s a discount — great. If not, I move on. No stress.
Even small savings add up fast when you’re feeding more than one child.
3. Share Mains, Skip Starters
Kids rarely finish full meals. We all know this.
Instead of ordering starters and mains, I’ll often:
-
order fewer mains
-
add sides
-
share food
Less waste. Smaller bill. No tears over untouched garlic bread.
4. Kids’ Menu = Zero Shame
Kids’ menus are cheaper and usually exactly what children will eat.
If the restaurant allows it, I’ll happily order from the kids’ menu for older children too — especially if portions are decent.
I’m not here to impress anyone.
I’m here to feed people.
5. Lunch Beats Dinner Every Time
If you can eat out at lunchtime instead of the evening, do it.
Lunch menus are:
-
cheaper
-
quieter
-
faster
Which means fewer meltdowns and a much nicer experience overall.
6. Bring Snacks (Yes, Even When Eating Out)
This saves money and sanity.
Snacks stop impulse ordering extra sides or desserts just to keep the peace. No guilt. Survival only.
7. Loyalty Cards & Points Matter
If you eat at the same places regularly:
-
download the app
-
collect points
-
use vouchers
A free kids’ meal or £5 off here and there adds up over a year.
8. Takeaway Counts as Eating Out
Sometimes eating “out” doesn’t need a restaurant.
Takeaways:
-
avoid drink mark-ups
-
avoid service charges
-
keep kids comfortable
If everyone eats and the budget survives, it counts.
BONUS: Get Up to 50% Off Your Food Bill
There’s an app I use that genuinely feels too good to be true — but absolutely works.
It’s called First Table.
It gives up to 50% off the food bill when you book the first table of the day at participating restaurants (breakfast, lunch, or early dinner). You usually still pay for drinks, but the food discount makes a huge difference for families.
Early dinner, cheaper bill, kids fed before meltdown hour?
That’s a win.
Mini Guide: How to Use First Table
-
Download the First Table app or visit their website
-
Search restaurants in your area
-
Look for available first table slots (early times)
-
Book quickly — slots go fast, especially at weekends
-
Pay full price for drinks, up to 50% off food
It’s especially good for:
-
early dinners with kids
-
lunch outings
-
quieter, calmer meals
If eating a bit earlier saves half the bill, I’m absolutely doing it.
The Mindset That Saves the Most Money
Eating out doesn’t need to look Instagram-perfect.
It just needs to:
-
fit your budget
-
work for your family
-
not leave you stressed
Sharing mains still counts.
Early dinners still count.
Staying home sometimes also counts.
